The Marie hat shown here is a 15" low crowned straw called a Bergère. Popular from the mid 1700's to early 1800's, it was representative of the simpler styles and fashions that were coming into vogue, beginning with Marie Antoinette's famous Shepherdess experiment. A version of it can seen in this fashion plate, "A Peep into Kensington Gardens" from The Gallery of Fashion (Morning Dress, June 1794) as well as this self portrait by artist Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, 1782.
